Gregg's Guide to Smart Trainers!
Smart trainers; our favorite training tool. Smart Trainers allow you to ride in the comfort of your own home at any time of day. You can connect and ride with other riders or get a hard workout, all on your own schedule. Don't let the winter gloom stop you from riding!
Smart trainers work by interacting with software to control the unit’s resistance. By pairing with a computer, tablet, or smartphone these trainers allow the rider to ride a structured work out, simulate varying terrain, record training metrics, and get social in a virtual ride on a platform. Imagine being able to ride with friends anywhere around the world at anytime or get the perfect workout independent of weather conditions.
There are two types of trainers within this category, wheel-off and wheel-on. Wheel-off trainers, also referred to as direct-drive, are different in that the bicycle bolts directly to them by taking the rear wheel off. This allows for more accurate power measurements and a much more realistic ride feel.
Wheel-on trainer requires the rider to keep their rear wheel on and in contact with the trainer. This makes the ride feel less realistic and sluggish. All the trainers we carry are Bluetooth Smart and ANT+ fe-c compatible. We carry trainers from Tacx, Wahoo, and Cycleops.
The NEO Smart is the most powerful and silent indoor trainer to date. It is the only real direct drive as it does not contain any physical transmission like a roller or belt. The NEO is also the only indoor trainer that can simulate different types of road surfaces. The NEO Smart has a max wattage of 2200w and is accurate to +/- 1%.
The FLUX is a compact and realistic interactive direct drive and is maintenance-free. The swift response of the Smart electronics and the 7kg flywheel transmit the slightest fluctuations in resistance directly and accurately to your legs. The FLUX has a max wattage of 1500w and is accurate to +/- 3%.
The KICKR indoor trainer's large flywheel uses new algorithms to improve responsiveness and better replicate the sensation of riding on the road. So, whether free-riding or using online platforms like Zwift and Trainer Road, you will have the same experience you feel on your favorite outdoor rides. The KICKR has a max wattage of 2000w and is accurate to +/- 2%.
The SNAP's wheel-on design makes it easy to turn your road, mountain, or TT bike into a powerful indoor smart trainer. Like KICKR, the SNAP bike trainer uses your smartphone, tablet or computer to control resistance and provide a reliable power measurement so you can monitor and adjust your intensity. The SNAP has a max wattage of 1500w and is accurate to +/-3%.
The Hammer is PowerTuned using PowerTap technology for accurate power readings. Direct drive design for increased bike compatibility and quiet performance. Innovative electromagnetic resistance provides rapid response resistance and maximum power. Hammer seamlessly connects to virtual training apps with dual ANT+ FE-C and Bluetooth 4.0.
